ANCIENT GREECE

COMES TO ROOM 10

We have studying "Ancient Greece" during History lessons. Part of our study involves a webquest, which allowed us the opportunity to build the "Parthenon" ( Παρθενών) . Many students created their building from clay and cardboard.
The Parthenon is a temple on the Athenian Acropolis, Greece, dedicated to the goddess Athena, whom the people of Athens considered their patron. The Greek Ministry of Culture is currently carrying out a program of selective restoration and reconstruction to ensure the stability of the partially ruined structure.
We have all enjoyed learning about the history of the Parthenon. We now know why there were different styles of columns and what the different patterns stand for. Everyone is extremely proud of the temples we built and we have them on display in Block 2. Teaghan made an eatable Parthenon, which we all thoroughly enjoyed in the afternoon. Luckily, Mrs Lavery took some 'happy snaps' of Teaghan's model before then.

Our class display in Block 2

In Pairs we had the opportunity to discuss with the class, how we constructed our models. We spoke about the materials we used and what degree of difficulty we experienced. During our talks, we spoke about the story of the Parthenon and how long ago it was built. The temple was destroyed, when Turkey was storing their gunpowder inside, there was an explosion and the celler walls crumbled to rubble.

Shyanne and Teaghan presented their power point presentation about Greece. It included information about Gods and Goddess myths of the ancient past. They both dressed up for the occasion, which allowed Room 10 to transfer back in time during the girl's presentation.

You both look great.         Well done girls!!!

During the last week of Term 1, we had the opportunity to make and bake 'Anzac" biscuits. We were also very lucky to have the help from a parent, this made it easier for us to make the cookies. Even while we were mixing all the ingredients, the aroma from the mixing bowls made us feel very hungry. We couldn't wait to have the cookies in the oven and baking. We would like to thank Alannah's mum, Julie, for assisting us and teaching us to make the most delicious Anzac cookies we have ever eaten.

Term Two Update

Welcome to the Groovy Graduates blog site. It has been a very busy end of Term 1 and beginning of Term 2. The students have sat their NAPLAN testing and we are now continuing our fortnightly tests. These Test Books are sent home once a term for parents to view their students' work. The test books cover the Learning Areas covered in the classroom and they are a good indication to parents, the type of work covered in the class during the term. During Term 1 and Term 2, the students had a task to complete for Technology and Enterprise (T&E). The task was to create a container to help keep a bottle of water cold over a period of an hour. Today, we tested the many different water bottle holders for their temperature rating. Many students created their holders from polystyrene and they were all rather surprised at how cold the water became and how it held it's temperature. Emilee was successful at making a difference in the water temperature over a one hour period.

Checking temperature of the water in the bottle

In the middle of last term, Mrs Lavery announced that we were going to start making a water bottle cooler. When I first started to think about it, I thought to make an esky sort of thing. I was right, we had to make something to freeze a water bottle for a day. Si, I started and in the end I made a big foam box. Inside the box, was a plastic cylinder full of ice. I ended up being in the top 5 students of the class. ......Cassandra

Emilee and her winning water cooler container

At the beginning of the term, we had to make "Water Bottle Coolers". We had to make a design, then we had to build it. On the 20 May, we tested out water cooler containers. I won by 1 degree, in 2nd place was Tanisha and Tazmyn. when I heard I won, I was so excited. I didn't think I had a chance of winning......Emilee
