WATTLE GROVE HAS TALENT

During Term 2, Wattle Grove held their annual talent show. Once again we had the opportunity to see some fantastic acts. Some of these included singers, dancers, pianists and a hoola hoop act.
Syanne and Tanisha, from Room 10, sang as a duo and then Shyanne sang as a solo act.
Well done girls, everyone from Room 10 was very proud of you for performing in front of the whole school and parents.

MARS ONE

Students in Years 6 and 7 were extremely lucky to receive a visit from Josh Richards. Josh is in the running for the opportunity to go to Mars on the Mars One expedition. Josh informed the students about the experiences he had already gone through to become short selected.  He also told the students, it was a one way trip. There would be NO returning to Earth. This made the students think of many questions to ask Josh. They couldn't imagine how difficult it would be to never see their families again. Many questions were asked about the training required and about how Josh and the crew would grow food and survival skills. Josh showed pictures of the cubicles the staff would live in and how every two years a set of new crew would be expected to arrive on Mars.
We thank Josh and Mr Petch for the opportunity to have this visit at wattle Grove Primary, I'm sure it was an incursion the students will remember for a very long time.
Thankyou to Josh Richards, and we wish you all the best in the selection process for Mars One.
Mr Petch introducing Josh Richards to the students.

Thanks Josh, we hope your dream comes true and you make it to Mars.

SPEAK UP AWARD

During Term 2, the Year 5, 6 and 7 students at Wattle Grove, had the opportunity to write a script or speech, to perform infront of their peers and teachers. Their speech was to relate to a topic, close to their heart. Students had to ensure the talk lasted approximately 3 minutes long.
In Room 10, the many topics ranged from, 'Dog Fighting', 'Asylum Seekers', 'Horse Racing' and 'Living with Disability'. The students performed their speeches with detail to their topic as well as passion. It was terrific to hear the variety of topics. The students had researched their topics well and expressed their honest feelings and thoughts through their talks.
Room 10 is pleased to announce, Nazdana, was one of the three students, selected to represent Wattle Grove Primary into the next round. This will include many students from various primary schools, competing against each other, talking about their chosen topic.
We all wish Nazdana all the best. Nazdana has been rehearsing her speech during the school holidays. This time the speech is to last 4 minutes. Nazdana has added more information to her speech to ensure it lasts the required length of time.
Nazdana performs her speech on 'Asylum Seekers'.
Elle spoke about 'Dog Fighting'.
Amy's speech was on 'Horse Racing'.
Matilda spoke about 'Drugs in the sport of Wrestling'.
'A Girl in a Male Dominated Sport of BMX', this topic was chosen by Isabella.

Well done, to all the students who performed their speeches on the day. We all certainly learned some interesting information about many different topics.

OUR OLYMPICS

To conclude our study of Ancient Greece, Rooms 10 and 15 held their own Olympics.
We were placed into groups of 6 students per group. There were 8 teams all up. We named our groups after Greek Gods, such as, Ares, Hades, and Poseidon. This is an example of three group's names.

The first game was very exciting. Each member of the group had a straw and the whole group had one Ping Pong ball. Three members were on one side of the room, while the other three members were on the other side of the room. Each individual group member had to blow through the straw and move the Ping Pong ball to another member of the group. this continued until all the members had a turn. It was harder to complete the task, than it actually looked.
Another game was when we had to suck through a straw and pass 14 lifesavers from one plate into another plate. Each team member had to do this, then we had to redo it and end up back at the beginning of the group line. It was a close game and it became difficult to suck through the straw without laughing.

Our final game for the Olympics was so much fun, we had to dress the group captain in an Ancient Greece outfit. Sounds easy, well, we had to use newspaper to create the outfit. Yes, Newspaper!!!!
But, it was actually a lot of fun to do. We all enjoyed dressing our team captain in newspaper. We were really surprised, how creative we became. We made a tunic, shoes, head-dress and even weapons. We really enjoyed this particular activity.

We really appreciate the hard work that the Olympians would have endured to compete, especially in the Ancient times. We had a great Olympics and enjoyed learning about Ancient Greece during Term 2. We learned about the many ancient Gods and how the people lived in the ancient times. The story of The Trojan Horse was fascinating. The horse structure was huge and it carried so many men. We learned about the Scientists and Mathematicians of Ancient Greece. People such as, Plato, Socrates and Archimedes.
